Starting out: how to set up commonly used email filters

Email Filters are available for Pobox Plus and Mailstore accounts.

You can use the Email Filters to perform all types of useful actions to your email that are specific to your email needs. This article will give you some examples of what many of our customers find to be the most useful ways to take advantage of the Filters tool, such as creating a personal blacklist which will discard messages to the Spam section.

Discard Filter: Stop the Same Old Spam For Good

Many users tend to get the same type of spam over and over. If you notice a pattern with the type of spam that gets through your Pobox spam protection, you can set up a Discard filter to look for certain keywords in incoming mail, and discard any message that includes that keyword. For instance, many email users receive spam with a certain pill name involved in the message: a pill for which they may have no interest. For this example, we'll call this pill "Vioqra".

To block emails that contain the pill name "Vioqra" in the To:, From:, Subject line, or even the body of the message, you can create a Discard filter to look for "Vioqra" anywhere in this message. To do so, go to Email Filters, give the filter a Description like "Discard Vioqra", and then, under "What should this filter match?", set up the following phrase:

'Anywhere' 'Contains' 'All', and type in 'Vioqra'

Then, under "What should happen to matching messages?", select 'Discard The Message'. Clicking "Save Filter" will save this filter to your account, sending all messages containing "Vioqra" to your Spam section.

Add Text to Subject: Highlight Important Emails

We know that some of our customers gets lots and lots of email every day, and picking out the most urgent, important ones, can be a pain. Some of our users create Filters that look for a keyword in an email, and when finding it, the Filter will add text to the beginning of that email's subject line, making it easier to find in their inbox. So, let's say you receive emailed statements from your bank, "First Hudson Bank", that you always want to see in your inbox. You could create a filter to look for the keywords "First Hudson", and when finding those words together, will add the text "BANK EMAIL" to the beginning of the Subject line before delivering it to your inbox.

To set up such a filter, go to Email Filters, type in a Description such as "BANK EMAIL", and then, under "What should this filter match?", set up the following phrase:

'Anywhere' 'Contains' 'All', and type in 'First Hudson'

Then, under "What should happen to matching messages?", select 'Add This Text To The Subject', and type in "BANK EMAIL". Clicking "Save" will save this filter to your account, adding the text "BANK EMAIL" to the subject line of any email containing the phrase "First Hudson".

(NOTE: It is useful to note the use of the "All" in this filter. If you changed this dropdown to "Any" instead of "All", the filter in this example would be triggered with any emails that include "First Hudson", or just "First" or just "Hudson". Selecting "All" instructs the filter to only add text to the subject if the whole phrase "First Hudson", in that order, is present in the email.)
